 Common Problems: Phase 1 Treatment

This phase of treatment is most often indicated by the presence of more severe orthodontic problems and occurs normally age eight to ten (8-10). Treatment utilizes early growth to improve the development of the erupting permanent dentition and the lower face. A few examples are:

  • Protrusion of upper teeth
  • Narrow upper and lower arches
  • Protrusion of upper incisors
Examples of Dr. Turners Treatment
Protrusion of upper teeth
Problem: Protrusion of upper teeth and jaw with the lower front teeth hitting the roof of the mouth. The upper and lower permanent cuspids are also partially blocked out.

Solution: Involved upper arch expansion, improvement in the anterior-posterior discrepancy, and opening spaces for the permanent cuspids.

Narrow upper and lower arches
Problem: Narrow upper and lower arches with significant crowding of the permanent teeth (both erupted and unerupted).

Solution: Treatment involved upper and lower arch expansion, alignment of the upper anterior teeth, and opening spaces for the unerupted upper cuspids.

Protrusion of upper incisors
Problem: Protrusion of upper incisors with the lower lip postured behind the upper central incisors. Narrow dental arches are also present with significant crowding of the erupted and unerupted permanent teeth.

Treatment: Involved upper and lower arch expansion, alignment of the anterior teeth, and improvement of the anterior-posterior relationship. Spaces were also opened for the unerupted permanent teeth (the lower right cuspid was completely blocked out). Note the improvement in lower lip posture.
