 Common Problems: Early Treatment

Early Treatment is indicated when there is a problem which may significantly affect development or risk damage to the permanent teeth or supporting tissues. Common examples include:

  • Abnormal eruption of incisors
  • Anterior crossbite
  • Lower teeth encompassing upper teeth
Examples of Dr. Turners Treatment
Abnormal eruption of incisors
Problem: Failure of the upper left central and lateral incisors to erupt normally.

Treatment: Involved exposure of the impacted teeth and movement with orthodontic appliances.

Anterior crossbite
Problem: Proper jaw development is affected and may damage the supporting tissue of lower anterior teeth.

Treatment: Involved a removable appliance and braces on the anterior teeth. The gum and bone support of the lower incisor improved considerably but periodontal surgery may still be indicated in the future.

Lower teeth encompassing upper teeth
Problem: This condition has an adverse effect on upper and lower jaw growth and dental development. There is also crowding of the upper unerupted permanent teeth.

Treatment: Involved expansion of the upper arch and correction of the anterior crossbite. This allowed the patient to close properly without posturing the mandible forward. Spaces were also opened for the unerupted upper permanent teeth.
